When an aquarium has just been set up, it may appear immediately ready for its first inhabitants. The water is clear, the filter is running, and the plants are beginning to settle in. However, an essential yet invisible process must first become established: the nitrogen cycle.

During this stage, the aquarium develops the bacteria needed to transform toxic waste. This generally takes several weeks, but the duration is not the same for every aquarium.

An aquarium is therefore not ready simply because three or four weeks have passed. To determine whether its biological balance is truly beginning to function, you need to understand what is happening in the water and monitor changes in certain parameters, particularly nitrite.


What Is the Nitrogen Cycle?

The nitrogen cycle is a natural biological process that gradually transforms the waste produced in an aquarium.

This waste may come from:

  • fish excrement;

  • uneaten food;

  • dead leaves;

  • decomposing plants or organisms;

  • any other organic matter present in the aquarium.


As this material decomposes, it mainly produces ammonium and, depending on the pH and temperature, a varying proportion of ammonia. These substances can be dangerous to aquatic animals.

Microorganisms gradually colonise the filter media, substrate, decorations, and other surfaces in the aquarium. They then transform these nitrogen compounds in several stages.


First Stage: Waste Produces Ammonium and Ammonia

Organic matter first begins to decompose. It releases ammonium and ammonia compounds, commonly represented by the chemical formulas NH₄ and NH₃.

Ammonia (NH₃) is particularly toxic. The proportion of ammonia present depends notably on the pH and water temperature: the higher the pH and temperature, the greater the potentially dangerous proportion of ammonia may become.


Second Stage: Nitrite Appears

A first community of microorganisms transforms the ammonium and ammonia compounds into nitrite, known as NO₂.

Nitrite is highly toxic to fish and other aquatic animals. Its increase during the start-up period is commonly known as the “nitrite spike”.

However, this spike is not always clearly visible. In a heavily planted or properly seeded aquarium, or when tests are performed too far apart, the increase may remain subtle or occur between two measurements. Failing to observe an obvious spike does not therefore automatically prove that the aquarium is ready.


Third Stage: Conversion into Nitrate

Another community of microorganisms then transforms nitrite into nitrate, known as NO₃.

Nitrate is generally better tolerated than ammonia and nitrite, but it must not be allowed to accumulate unchecked. Some of it is consumed by plants, while regular water changes also help remove it.

Its concentration should always be interpreted according to the livestock, planting, and particular needs of the species being kept.


Where Do Beneficial Bacteria Live?

Contrary to a common misconception, the bacteria responsible for biological balance do not live primarily in the water.

They mainly colonise the available surfaces:

  • biological filter media;

  • filter sponges;

  • the aquarium floor and substrate;

  • roots and stones;

  • the glass;

  • plants and other decorative elements.

The filter therefore plays an essential role. It does more than trap visible particles: its filter media provide a large surface area for beneficial microorganisms to colonise.

This is why the filter must run continuously, both day and night. A prolonged shutdown gradually deprives the bacteria of oxygen and water circulation, which can weaken the biological balance.


How Long Does the Nitrogen Cycle Take?

A period of three to six weeks is often suggested. This estimate is a useful guideline, but never a guarantee.

The cycling time depends on many factors:

  • temperature;

  • pH and the mineral content of the water;

  • oxygenation;

  • the size and operation of the filter;

  • the type of filter media;

  • the number of plants;

  • the presence of a source of organic matter;

  • the possible use of starter bacteria;

  • seeding with filter media from a healthy aquarium;

  • the frequency and accuracy of testing.

Two aquariums set up on the same day may therefore develop at different rates.


Time Alone Is Not Enough

Waiting one month and then automatically adding fish remains an imprecise approach. A calendar cannot reveal the actual nitrite concentration or the filter’s ability to process the waste that the future inhabitants will produce.

The essential rule is:

An aquarium is not considered ready simply because a certain number of days have passed. Water tests and the stability of the system must confirm its development.

Even once the initial cycle has become established, the biological balance is still young. Livestock should therefore be introduced gradually, allowing the microorganisms time to adapt to the increasing amount of waste.


How Can You Monitor the Cycle in Your Aquarium?

The best approach is to monitor changes in the water regularly using suitable tests.

Liquid reagent tests are particularly useful for accurately tracking water parameters. Test strips can provide an initial indication, but their readings are generally less precise, especially when low concentrations need to be monitored.

There is no universal target for pH, GH, or KH. A fish originating from soft, acidic water does not have the same requirements as a species that naturally lives in hard, alkaline water.

The aim is therefore not to achieve supposedly perfect numbers, but stable water suited to the future inhabitants.


A Simple Monitoring Method

After setting up the aquarium:

  1. Record the aquarium’s start date.

  2. Keep the filter and heater running continuously.

  3. Measure the main initial water parameters.

  4. Test nitrite regularly—for example, every two or three days during the critical period.

  5. Record every result together with the date.

  6. Also monitor ammonium or ammonia if you have the corresponding test.

  7. Then check nitrate, pH, GH, and KH.

  8. Wait for stable results before considering the gradual introduction of livestock.

Using the same test each time and carefully following its instructions makes the results easier to compare.


Do You Need to Add Anything to Start the Cycle?

To develop a population of microorganisms capable of processing waste, the aquarium needs a source of nitrogen. A tank containing only very clean water may not develop enough biological filtration to cope with the sudden introduction of an entire population.

Several cycling methods are available. They may use a controlled source of organic matter, a product specifically designed for fishless cycling, or filter media from a healthy aquarium.

Starter bacteria can help seed the filter, but they do not automatically make it safe to add all the fish immediately. Their effectiveness depends, among other things, on how they were stored, how they are used, and the conditions in the aquarium.

Whatever method is chosen, it must remain controlled. Adding a large amount of food and allowing it to decompose without monitoring can cause excessive pollution and make the tank’s development difficult to interpret.


How Can You Tell Whether the Aquarium Is Ready?

Before adding any livestock, several conditions should be met:

  • the filter is operating correctly and continuously;

  • the temperature is stable;

  • nitrite is undetectable with the test being used;

  • ammonium and ammonia are undetectable when measured;

  • the water parameters are compatible with the intended species;

  • the results remain consistent across repeated measurements;

  • no significant amount of organic matter is decomposing;

  • the plants show signs of adapting or producing new growth;

  • the livestock plan is appropriate for the aquarium’s actual volume.

The absence of nitrite in a single test is not always enough. One isolated result does not show how the tank is developing. A series of measurements, combined with a suitable cycling method, provides a more reliable indication of the system’s maturity.

If in doubt, it is better to wait and seek advice than to expose animals to unstable water.


Why Should Fish Be Introduced Gradually?

A newly cycled aquarium does not yet have the same stability as a tank that has been running for several months.

The population of microorganisms has developed according to the amount of waste available during the cycling period. Adding many fish at once causes a sudden increase in excrement and uneaten food.

The biological filter may then become temporarily overwhelmed, causing ammonia or nitrite to rise again.

It is therefore preferable to:

  • begin with an appropriate first group;

  • feed sparingly;

  • monitor nitrite after introduction;

  • wait until the parameters remain stable;

  • add the rest of the livestock gradually.

The order of introduction also depends on the behaviour of the species. Territorial fish should not always be the first inhabitants added.


The Most Common Mistakes During Cycling

Adding Fish According to a Fixed Date

Waiting three or four weeks is not enough if no test confirms how the water has developed.

Switching Off the Filter at Night

The microorganisms need regular water circulation and oxygen. The filter must operate continuously.

Replacing All the Filter Media

The filter media host a significant part of the bacterial population. Replacing all of them at once can destabilise the aquarium.

Cleaning the Filter Excessively

A biologically active filter should not be made sterile. When maintenance becomes necessary, reusable filter media can be gently rinsed in water removed from the aquarium. This removes the largest deposits without unnecessarily cleaning the entire filter too thoroughly.

Adding Too Much Food

A large amount of decomposing food can cause excessive pollution. Any source of organic matter should be carefully measured and monitored.

Assuming That Clear Water Is Necessarily Healthy

Ammonia and nitrite are invisible. Perfectly clear water may nevertheless be dangerous.

Adding the Entire Population at Once

Even when the initial cycle is established, the biological filtration must be allowed to adapt gradually to the amount of waste produced.


Should You Change the Water During Cycling?

In an aquarium being cycled without fish, it is not necessary to change the water automatically according to a fixed schedule. The decision depends on the method used and the measured values.

A partial water change may be useful if concentrations reach excessive levels, if a significant amount of material is decomposing, or if the water develops an unusual smell.

A water change can also be performed before introducing the first inhabitants to reduce accumulated nitrate, provided that this is not mistaken for proof that the cycle is complete.

Changing part of the water does not remove all the beneficial bacteria, since they mainly live in the filter and on surfaces. However, suitable water at a similar temperature should be used, and chlorine or other possible disinfectants should be neutralised when necessary.


What Should You Do If Fish Are Already Present During a Nitrite Spike?

The presence of nitrite in a stocked aquarium must be taken seriously.

If the fish breathe rapidly, remain close to the surface, become lethargic, or display unusual behaviour, action must be taken immediately.

The first measures generally include:

  • immediately testing nitrite and ammonia or ammonium;

  • carrying out a sufficiently large partial water change using suitable water;

  • increasing oxygenation and surface agitation;

  • temporarily reducing feeding;

  • removing waste and decomposing organisms;

  • checking that the filter is operating correctly;

  • repeating the tests and performing further water changes if necessary;

  • promptly seeking advice if the values remain abnormal or the fish show symptoms.

Adding a product does not replace water testing or the necessary water changes. The priority is to reduce the animals’ exposure to toxic substances.

How Long Should You Wait Before Adding Fish?

Cycling frequently takes several weeks, often between three and six, but no waiting period alone can guarantee that the aquarium is ready. Nitrite and ammonia compounds must be undetectable with the tests being used, and the results must remain consistent. The livestock should then be introduced gradually.

Can You Speed Up the Nitrogen Cycle?

The aquarium can be seeded with starter bacteria or filter media from a healthy aquarium. Suitable temperature and oxygenation also promote biological activity. These methods can help, but they never replace testing and cannot guarantee a precise completion date.

Should the Filter Be Switched On During Cycling?

Yes. The filter must operate continuously from the moment the aquarium is filled. The microorganisms responsible for nitrification need a regular supply of oxygenated water. A prolonged shutdown can slow their development or destabilise an already established biological filter.

Can You Add Plants on the First Day?

Yes. Adding plants from the start is generally beneficial. They use certain nutrients, provide additional surfaces for microorganisms, and gradually contribute to the aquarium’s overall balance. However, even dense planting does not remove the need to monitor water parameters.

Can You See the Nitrite Spike with the Naked Eye?

No. Nitrite is invisible and does not necessarily alter the appearance of the water. It must be measured with a suitable test. Clear water therefore does not guarantee the absence of toxic substances.

Does Adding Bacteria Allow You to Introduce Fish Immediately?

The nitrogen cycle is the first major stage in the life of an aquarium. It is not simply a matter of waiting for time to pass, but of allowing a genuine microscopic ecosystem to develop.

  • clear water is not necessarily ready water;

  • a number of weeks is no substitute for testing;

  • livestock should always be introduced gradually.
